HISTORY OF RAMNAGAR


Ramnagar  also served as the capital of old Bandralta state. During the reign of Maha Raja Ranjit Singh (A.D. 1819-39), it came under thw rule of sikh and Raja Suchet Singh (A.D 1801-1844), the brother of Gulab Singh of Jammu Who became its ruler in A.D 1822. Raja Suchet Singh besides being a valiant general was also a great connoisseur of art. He took much interest in Ramnagar and built the places Shish Mahal  and Purana Mahal. He also renovated the fort situated in the town. The nawa Mahal complex was built by Raja Ram Singh ( A.D. 1801-84), who succeeded to the throne in Ramnagar in A.D. 1844. He was son of Ranbir Singhj Who became the Maha Raja of Jammu and Kashmir In A.D. 1856 .Raja Suchet singh died in A.D. 1844 in near Lahore. It is believed that the queen of Suchet Singh Performed Sati or self immolation at Ramnagar. A beautiful Structure Which houses her Samadhi was built by Raja Ranbir singh( nephew of Suchet Singh) at the spot where she performed Sati.
